“Collective Futures Reimagined'' envisions a world where everyone works towards creating a better future for everyone. Today’s challenges require collective action and a shared responsibility towards a sustainable, equitable and just world. It is thus a call to action for individuals, organisations and communities to come together and work towards a brighter future.

Pantun 4PM: Dahulu, Sekarang dan Selamanya
oleh Shahril Samri, Pantunism

Bijak pendekar wajahnya tampan,
Pikat jelita berbaju merah;
4PM menuju hadapan,
Maju berjaya lakar sejarah.

Tidaklah riuh suasana desa,
Tetap berdagang banyak barangan;
Melangkah jauh mengenang jasa,
Perintis 4PM dilupa jangan.

Terbang tinggi seekor helang,
Terbang damai menuju muara;
4PM memang terbilang,
Bijana ramai tokoh negara.

Desa cerah terlihat petani,
Bekerja rajin bersikap hemat;
Lakar sejarah semangat murni,
4PM sentiasa berkhidmat.

Congratulatory Messages

MR LAWRENCE WONG
DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER AND MINISTER FOR FINANCE

Congratulations to the Malay Youth Literary Association (4PM) on your 75th anniversary!

Since 1948, 4PM has left an indelible mark on our community. Your education and youth mentorship programmes have helped uplift and nurture many Malay/Muslim youth. 4PM has also cultivated a generation of young volunteer activists and leaders who give back to the community. Efforts like these are essential to Singapore’s progress as a nation.

We aim to do more to uplift our children, especially those from lower income and disadvantaged backgrounds, and help them maximise their potential. We also want to nurture an active and strong community, where people feel a deep sense of responsibility for one another. Achieving all this will require close cooperation between the Government and community groups like 4PM.

I wish 4PM continued success in its mission to “Unite and Serve” the community.  Working together, we can build a fairer and more inclusive society, and a better and stronger Singapore.

MR NASSAR MOHAMAD ZAIN
PRESIDENT OF 4PM

Persatuan Persuratan Pemuda Pemudi Melayu (4PM) is honored to be serving with commitment and dedication to impacting the lives of many in our community for the past 75 years. It is a milestone achievement indeed.

I would like to thank all our members, volunteers, and staff, both past and present, for their solid contribution to maximize youth potential for the future of our community. Certainly, we would not have been here today without the strong foundations laid by our respected pioneers since 1948.

The theme for 4PM’s Diamond Jubilee celebration 2023 is "Collective Futures Reimagined''. The past 75 years of collective efforts have inspired us to continue empowering our youths and community through education, community engagement, and developmental programmes. It also envisions a world where individuals and communities work toward a common goal to create a better future for all.

Therefore, this momentous celebration is not for 4PM alone. It could not have been achieved without the unwavering support of our long-standing partners as well, and for that we are truly grateful.

Looking ahead into the new horizon, we hope to inspire others to join our mission, to unite and serve our community even in the face of uncertainties, guided by the cumulative wisdom and guidance from those who have served before us.

As the Malay saying goes “Bersatu kita teguh, bercerai kita roboh” (Together we are strong, divided we fall). 4PM promise to continue to play its part to the progress of the Malay/Muslim community and Singapore society at large. To many more years of service and collective growth!

MS RAHAYU MAHZAM
SENIOR PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY, MINISTRY OF HEALTH & MINISTRY OF LAW AND MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT FOR JURONG GRC

Congratulations 4PM on your 75th anniversary! I am heartened to see 4PM’s concerted efforts in providing services to the community and nurturing the youth over the years. A special thank you to all members, volunteers and staff, both past and present, for their unwavering commitment to making a difference in the community. As an organisation, 4PM has touched many lives and achieved tremendous growth in nurturing potential and empowering youth through the provision of a wide range of platforms and immersive engagements for young people to learn and flourish.

In particular, your continuous efforts to promote the usage of Malay Language through debate competitions at the national level are commendable. To date, Bahas 4PM has produced several generations of successful youth who have become influential leaders in our community. I firmly believe that 4PM's dedicated efforts to promote eloquence and critical thinking among our youth will continue to shape the future leaders and articulate speakers of tomorrow.

I am also excited about 4PM’s commitment to be part of larger efforts and collaborate with other stakeholders. Efforts with Mentoring SG to build a culture of mentoring in Singapore and the work with the Singapore Malay Language Council (Majlis Bahasa Melayu Singapura) demonstrate the organisation’s willingness to work with partners for the larger good. I hope these partnerships will lead to more efforts in years to come.

I hope that 4PM will grow from strength to strength and may you continue to meaningfully contribute to community and nation!

MDM ZURAIDAH ABDULLAH
CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER OF YAYASAN MENDAKI

On behalf of the management and staff of Yayasan MENDAKI, I take great pleasure in congratulating the Malay Youth Literary Association (4PM) on its 75th anniversary!

In its early years, 4PM’s leaders established community schools, initiated tuition classes, conducted Quran-reading classes, provided bursaries to students, and organised oratorical contests. Today, the organisation has expanded to cultivate a culture of youth leadership, mentoring and volunteerism through programmes such as Project Bestari ITE or Project bITE, Youth EDGE and Buddy.

Since 1989, 4PM has played an instrumental role as one of Yayasan MENDAKI’s Institutional Members. As one of the key Community Leaders Forum (CLF) partners, 4PM has also been leading and organising community projects to address community issues under M³ Focus Areas. Last year, CLF had supported 4PM’s projects such as –

a. Project Bestari ITE, which provides an opportunity for students in the Institutes of Technical Education to embark on a year-long journey of service learning and personal development;
b. Project Youth EDGE, which empowers youth who have been affected by incarceration of either their parents and/or immediate family members;
c. #4YOUth, which aims to drive youth towards excellence through mentoring and meaningful activities; and
d. Ramadan on Wheels, a volunteer-driven initiative that harnesses youth potentials and synergises the spirit of gotong-royong to uplift the community with a focus on disadvantaged families and needy elderly.

Ke bukit sama didaki, ke lurah sama dituruni. This proverb reflects the collective mission that 4PM, Yayasan MENDAKI and our fellow Malay/Muslim Organisations (MMOs) share in empowering and navigating our Malay/Muslim community towards success. Like 4PM, Yayasan MENDAKI’s mission in education remains as a foundation and pillar for the community.

Beyond developing youth-centric and educational programmes, Yayasan MENDAKI is also nurturing the next generation of MMO leaders, through the Tunas Bersama M3 programme. We are therefore happy to have 4PM represented in this programme.

As we work together to build a Community of Success, I look forward to reading many more accomplishments by 4PM. I wish 4PM many more good years ahead.

MS ANITA FAM
PRESIDENT OF THE NATIONAL COUNCIL OF SOCIAL SERVICE

I would like to extend my heartiest congratulations to 4PM for 75 years of significant work in uplifting the Malay community. Since its inception, 4PM has embodied the spirit of "gotong-royong" in order to meet the evolving needs of the community, particularly in youth development. Your tireless dedication to the people has left a clear mark towards a more caring and inclusive society, and I am certain that your unwavering commitment to improving the lives of others will make a difference for years to come.

Congratulations to you once again, and may your passion to empower the community continue to be the driving force that pushes you to greater heights of excellence.

Project bITE

Project bITE or BESTARI ITE provides a holistic service to the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) students to bring out their best and nurture their leadership potential through community service.

Here are the programmes under the bITE umbrella:

BESTARI CLUB

4PM BESTARI AWARD recognizes and rewards outstanding Malay/Muslim ITE students who have demonstrated excellent academic achievements. Every year, this award is given to the top 45 students across all three ITEs. Among them, one student will earn the Bestari Outstanding Student Award and another, the Bestari Resilience Award.

Through Bestari Club, these students give back to the community by being a mentor for FRENZ or leading a support group for families in Ramadan on Wheels (ROW), among other opportunities.

FRENZ

FRENZ is a comprehensive mentoring programme for ITE youths. 4PM engages youths through outreach workshops, group mentoring sessions and class-based activities. Using the multifaceted approach of Positive Youth Development in mentoring, students participate in developmental activities that encourage social interaction and empathy.

These activities are designed for students to develop socioemotional learning competencies such as self-awareness, social awareness, critical thinking, and problem solving. Over time, they develop to be responsible youth leaders who enable and empower others.

GEMS

Guide. Empower. Motivate. Support. (GEMS) caters to the general ITE student population, focusing on the spirit of volunteerism through meaningful pro-social activities in a supportive environment with strong mentors.

These youth-centered activities enable them to build meaningful life goals through strengths and new social skills, thus improving their interpersonal competence.

AKADEMI BAHAS 4PM

Bahas4PM is the national Malay-language debating competition since 1952. Debate became prominent as 4PM focused on education and critical thinking in the pre-Independence era.

As Bahas4PM evolves in rigor and standards alongside international practices, Akademi Bahas 4PM is born to support and develop debaters from the cradle to the grave. The academy charts the life cycle of a debater, starting with oracy workshops for secondary schools, to residential camps (Perkampungan Bahas) for tertiary students, and Bahas Muhibbah and study trips for regional debaters and alumni.

Community Engagement Committee (CEC)

Community Engagement Committee (CEC) engages public stakeholders including volunteers and organisational representatives through focus group discussions, workshops and dialogues. It engages youths across demographic markers, interests and aspirations.

CEC provides a safe environment for youths to express their opinions on current affairs and issues, thus deepening interest, knowledge and insight across multiple lenses and perspectives. This culminates in an incubation of novel ideas to social issues.

Ramadan On Wheels (ROW)

Ramadan On Wheels (ROW) is a volunteer-driven initiative that reaches out to less fortunate families and needy elderly through provision of food vouchers, food rations, workshops, skill training and family engagement activities.

The main objective of ROW is to improve beneficiaries' overall emotional, social and economic well-being. In addition to receiving groceries, vouchers and food hampers, beneficiaries participate in various activities that promote well-being, social interaction and family bonding.

Buddy Mentoring

Buddy Mentoring inspires schooling youths to be the best versions of themselves through meaningful group-based activities that enables youths to gain new experiences through positive relationships with others.

Based on Positive Youth Development, these youths become more compassionate and confident in interacting positively with others and voicing their thoughts and ideas across various social settings.

Project Youth EDGE

Project Youth EDGE is a developmental and engagement programme for youths aged 11-19 years old that adopt the Positive Youth Development framework.

Youths are given opportunities to lead community service projects and youth camps. They experience the desired positive growth through curated quality time with families and new friends.

DI JALAN INI KITA TERUS BERJALAN
DAN MENCORAKKAN MASA DEPAN BERSAMA
(bersempena ulang tahun 4PM yang ke-75)
Oleh Peter Augustine Goh

Semuanya bermula dari jalan ini
sedari 75 tahun lalu yang mengelus hati
jalan berbau harum cempaka sari
berulit aspirasi
disaksikan mentari
yang menghantar sinarnya memijar inspirasi.

Marilah kita terus berjalan bersama
mara berkicau aman
dalam warna cinta pesona atma
pelbagai lapisan masyarakat dan pendekatan
berulit kebeningan kepercayaan
sesekali usah diragu
sebuah keikhlasan pasti mencuit kalbu.

Di jalan terangsang ini
harus tertanam tekad
tekad bersulam harapan
harapan dalam bentuk kata-kata keramat
yang menghambat,
‘Pemuda harapan bangsa,
pemudi tiang negara’
betapa sentiasa bersinar benar
merafakkan setia dan azam
yang tak mudah padam
menggelinjang ke seluruh urat nadi
untuk memperoleh kejayaan
menyatakan impian
terpacu kerja keras
keberanian menghadapi cabaran
menyambar peluang
menepis segala keraguan
dan kekeliruan
puncaknya disuntik keyakinan
mara dan terus mara kaya iman.

Jalan ini panjang
pendakian tidak mudah
kerana curam tidak pernah terlepas perhatian
azam yang patah boleh terpadam.

Usah sesekali berharap akan sampai
ke penghujungnya yang melambai
selagi tidak tebal harapan
yang lebat dengan rangsangan impian
yang sarat dengan cinta kemenangan
yang pekat dengan semangat perjuangan
berlumba-lumba rancak memacak panji cita-cita
terkibar megah di puncak maju jaya
kekitaan yang disegani dunia.

Marilah kita terus berjalan
dan mencorakkan masa depan bersama
membina masyarakat yang tidak mudah tergeliat
bersatu padu membangunkan negara tercinta.

TOGETHER WE CONTINUE WALKING THE ROAD AND SHAPING THE FUTURE
(In conjunction with 75th Anniversary of 4PM)
By Peter Augustine Goh

It all began from this path
75 years ago that caressing the heart since
the road is filling with fragrant cempaka sari*
aspiration singing
the sun witnessing
radiating its light to illuminate inspiration.

Let us continue to walk together
chirping in peace
in the colours of love
the soul charming
layers of society in diversity
humming the serenity of beliefs
never once doubtful
as sincerity surely touches the heart.

On this road so motivating
grit and determination
should be embedded with hope
hope in the form of sacred words:
'The young men -  the hope of the people,
the young women -  the pillar of the nation'
how the truth always shines brightly
standing tall to loyalty
and not easily extinguished
pulsating the veins
gaining success, manifesting dreams
driven by hard work
courageously facing challenges and seizing opportunities
dispel all doubts and confusion
peaking confidence
and continue onwards
enriching trust.
This road is long
the climb to the top is never easy
as the steep never overlooking
broken determination could just fade away.

Don't ever hope reaching the final line
waving passionately
as long your hope is not thickening
with the stimulation of dreams
and with the saturation of love aplenty
intensely concentrated with the spirit of struggle
racing vigorously
displaying the banner of ambition
fluttering majestically at the summit of triumph,
for a nation well respected by the world.

Let's keep walking
and shaping the future together
to build a dynamic society
one that is not easily twisted and entangled
stay united in developing our beloved country.

boleh menjadikan perjuanganmu dingin
dan segala usahamu tergeliat
sekalipun persatuan yang kau anggotai
adalah terhebat di dunia ini.”

SYAIR KASIH 4PM
Oleh Peter Augustine Goh

4PM nama diberi,
Ditubuh sejak 75 tahun lagi,
Kini masih tegak berdiri,
Semangat waja pemuda pemudi.

Persatuan ini begitu teguh,
Bagaikan pokok berakar kukuh,
Sekalipun dilanda angin yang angkuh,
Tetap berdiri tegak dilihat dari jauh.

Para anggotanya cakna kewajipan,
Tanda jelas hala tuju persatuan,
Merafakkan azam dan kesetiaan,
Amanah dipikul penuh kesedaran.

Sekali bertekad dan berjanji,
Jaga lidah pantang memungkiri,
Segala kerja yang diamali,
Masyarakat percaya lagi disenangi.

Para anggota bijak bestari,
Jauhkan diri berkahwin dengan mimpi,
Mimpi hanya memperdaya realiti,
Kerana azam murni boleh dicuri.

Tiada juga titik kesudahan,
Akan terus berdenyut dan bertahan,
Perjuangan mulia di dipermudahkan.

Thank you for playing a key role in turning my life around to be who I am today. If I didn’t take that leap of faith with 4PM then, I believe I will still be living a life committing crimes and worst. The faith and belief the staff, the JKP members such as Johari, Abang Ismail, Abang Hairil, 4PM current president Nassar and especially to 4PM president then, Mr Izzudin Taherally, my sincerest gratitude to you all and to the organization. I will always cherish that. Thank you and I wish 4PM everlasting success in continuously helping youths like me to find purpose in life positively.
